Through unknown seas

There was a time many years ago when men travelled thousands of kilometres to cold lands in search of food. In the 16th and 17th centuries Basque whalers sailed to the north Atlantic in search of whales which had disappeared from the Basque coast.

They sailed on open seas through unknown waters travelling northwards further and further away from the safety of the old Cantabrian and its ports till they reached land whose seas with filled with whales: Terranova, which the Basques called Ternua. For months there on board small boats, they fought daily not only against the whales but also the extreme weather conditions. Against the winds of the north, threatening ice blocks, against a desperate sea, polar cold. A terrible stage setting where mean survived thanks to their faith, determination and value. Team work, depending on and trusting each other, with solidarity and devotion, not to mention preserving the environment which fed them, because those men knew the sea didn’t belong to them , but rather they belonged to her.
