Sostenibilidad e Innovación
The Ternua mountain ski suit made with recycled fishing nets is the 2019 Ispo award gold winner.

Forty-three judges from twelve countries on three continents chose Ternua's BLACKCOMB mountain ski suit as the best intermediate layer product in the Snow Sports category at the ISPO Munich trade show, where the brand is presenting its fall-winter 2019-2020 collection.

With this honour, Ternua has won this major award - known as the Oscars of sport - for the third time. In 2016, the ISPO GOLD AWARD was bestowed upon its “Terranova” and “South River” recycled feather jackets. And in 2017, the award went to its “Craddle” jackets, which are made entirely from recycled materials and are, in turn, recyclable.

This time around the jury looked at its design, innovation, functionality and sustainability. However, its principle characteristic is the high level of sustainable innovation put to use in the product. It provides maximum technicity and is made using recycled materials, consisting mostly of disused fishing nets from Cantabria mixed with elastane. And, when its life cycle is over it can be recycled.

It should be mentioned that this ski suit, intended for mountain skiing, was co-designed by Ternua with top notch athletes who organise the skimo Altitoy trial, which is among the elite runs in the Le Grande Course circuit. Those skiers, who are highly experienced in the subject, have tested the ski suit and included strategic details that make it become a 10/10 garment. Insofar as textiles, it's made with Dryshell Active Flex, which is a new technology developed by Ternua that is a blend of 65% recycled nylon from disused fishing nets (REDCYCLE project) and 35% elastane. The textile provides protection from solar radiation. In addition to a perfect ergonomic design, it has laser cut openings on the back for maximum breathability, two inside breast pockets for carrying an avalanche beacon and an opening on the front at the waist with an elastic clamp. It has reinforcements on the shoulders and inside the legs. It's a product for intense physical activity that has the perfect balance between breathability, lightness and warming capacity.

As Ternua Group Innovation Director Eduardo Uribesalgo explains: “This award reaffirms that we're moving in a good direction that's taking us towards the summit of innovation following our own route with one central tenet, which is sustainability. At Ternua, all of us that make up the brand have a philosophy in favour of sustainability and caring for the environment that's also expressed in the way we work. For us, doing things right is important, but more than anything, we're concerned with doing them in the right way. We want to make garments that protect people and are technical, carefully designed and have well thought out details, but we also want to protect the planet by using source materials that are recycled and recyclable and PFC free water proofing treatments.”
